National Innovation Foundation

The Department of Science and Technology help establish the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) of India, on Feb 28th 2000, with the main goal of providing institutional support in scouting, spawning, sustaining and scaling up grassroots green innovations and helping their transition to self supporting activities.

National Innovation Foundation has a Governing Council chaired by Dr. R. A. Mashelkar, Former Director General CSIR. and President Global Research Alliance. Professor Anil K. Gupta, President SRISTI and Professor Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, is the Executive Vice Chairperson of National Innovation Foundation.

For the last seventeen years the Honeybee Network and Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI) have been scouting innovations by farmers, artisans, women, etc. at the grassroots level.

Gujarat Grassroots Innovations Augmentation Network (GIAN) scales up innovations, from the Honey Bee database of innovations, through value additions in innovations to sustain creativity and ethics of experimentation. GIAN was conceived at the International Conference on Creativity and Innovation at Grassroots (ICCIG), jointly organized by IIM Ahmedabad and SRISTI.

The Honey Bee database of 10,000 innovations, collected and documented by SRISTI, would be part of the National Register of Innovations to be managed and supported by National Innovation Foundation .

Fostering Innovation-Driven Entrepreneurship

CIIE(Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship) aims at fostering innovation-driven entrepreneurship through incubation, research and dissemination of knowledge. CIIE was setup by IIM, Ahmedabad in 2001 and is supported by Government of Gujarat and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Since CIIE inception, a host of organizations, professionals, academicians and networking partners within India and across the globe have been closely associated with the initiatives of CIIE. Some of the ongoing projects of CIIE are also being backed by Wadhwani Foundation (set up by IT entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, USA), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (GoI), Piramal Foundation and Microsoft.

Setting up of CIIE was an outcome of the first national workshop on Indian Incubator for Innovation Based Enterprise (I3E) at IIMA in 1998, which brought together innovators, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, technology administrators and academics to understand the processes and policies related to commercializing technology based innovations by individual innovators. Expertise at IIMA in areas of technology network, management, grassroots level innovations and entrepreneurship development, provided the necessary impetus and the intellectual basis for this initiative.

Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship aims at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship development through research, incubation, consultancy and training in hi-tech and mass impact technologies to enhance welfare and competitiveness of the Indian economy. The three main focus area of CIIE include

  • Incubation: To incubate technology based innovations and help commercialize them through an enterprise
  • Research: To conduct research as well as training and develop educational material on topics related to innovations and their evolution into viable enterprises
  • Dissemination: To disseminate research findings and related information on the management of innovation, incubation and entrepreneurship.

SOW : Abdul Kalam's Homepage

I am sorry i am late for this week's site of the week. But as it is said everything happens for a reason, so as this.

I was really thinking what should be this week's SOW(site of the week). But i was not getting time either to post it on the blog. I normally post it on Tuesdays (12th AUGUST)

And then came 15 August; India's Independence day. There was a function arranged by SIES society the parent group of our college (SIESCOMS).

Also on this occasion SIES started SEAT an education trust to sponsor students' education. Since our ex president Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam strongly believes in education and the power of it on the minds of small childrens, our college really managed to call him to innugurate this trust.

He delivered a wonderful speech on Education Knowledge and Leadership. I will try and get the speech if possible.

It was the most memorable Independence Day of my life. So all my search ended, coincidently was thinking of dedicated SOW related to India/Independence, when Kalam sir announced his own website.

Hence presenting Site of the Week :-> http://www.abdulkalam.com

He even said that, if anybody has any kind of query s/he can mail it to apj@abdulkalam.com

And then goes his slogan: " Please repeat after me I CAN DO IT, WE CAN DO IT, INDIA CAN DO IT."

Tuesday - site of the week - India Image

We all talk about e-governance, transparency, right for information. But how many of us know the different types of websites provided by Government of India. Do we know that there exists something called as "India Image".

As it is commonly said that we are converting from memory based culture to intelligence based culture. This is because now a days getting information is not a big deal. But interpreting it intelligently is really big deal. On the same lines our very own government has started an initiative called as India Image.

India Image is a program to establishment Government of India's presence on the web. India Image Project, initiated in the year 1996. India Image is a popular programme of NIC with an objective to facilitate the establishment of a firm presence of Indian Government entities on the World Wide Web. India Image entails provision of an entire spectrum of web services to the Government sector as well as running specialized Portals for the benefit of citizens and other stakeholders.

Tuesday : Site of the Week: myDabbawla

A dabbawala (one who carries the box), sometimes spelled dabbawalla , tiffinwalla , tiffinwalla or dabbawallah, is a person in the Indian city of Mumbai whose job is to carry and deliver freshly made food from home in lunch boxes to office workers. Tiffin is an old-fashioned English word for a light lunch, and sometimes for the box it is carried in. Dabbawalas are sometimes called tiffin-wallas.

Though the work sounds simple, dabbawala is actually a highly specialized trade that is over a century old and which has become integral to Mumbai's culture.

The dabbawala originated when a person named Mahadeo Havaji Bachche started the lunch delivery service with about 100 men.Nowadays, Indian businessmen are the main customers for the dabbawalas, and the service often includes cooking as well as delivery.

Tuesday : Site of the Week : Planningcommision.nic.in

The Planning Commission was set up by a Resolution of the Government of India in March 1950 in pursuance of declared objectives of the Government to promote a rapid rise in the standard of living of the people by efficient exploitation of the resources of the country, increasing production and offering opportunities to all for employment in the service of the community. The Planning Commission was charged with the responsibility of making assessment of all resources of the country, augmenting deficient resources, formulating plans for the most effective and balanced utilisation of resources and determining priorities. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Chairman of the Planning Commission.

The first Five-year Plan was launched in 1951 and two subsequent five-year plans were formulated till 1965, when there was a break because of the Indo-Pakistan Conflict. Two successive years of drought, devaluation of the currency, a general rise in prices and erosion of resources disrupted the planning process and after three Annual Plans between 1966 and 1969, the fourth Five-year plan was started in 1969.

The Eighth Plan could not take off in 1990 due to the fast changing political situation at the Centre and the years 1990-91 and 1991-92 were treated as Annual Plans. The Eighth Plan was finally launched in 1992 after the initiation of structural adjustment policies.

For the first eight Plans the emphasis was on a growing public sector with massive investments in basic and heavy industries, but since the launch of the Ninth Plan in 1997, the emphasis on the public sector has become less pronounced and the current thinking on planning in the country, in general, is that it should increasingly be of an indicative nature.
