Social Entrepreneurship Lecture

On 29 July we had a privilege to attend a lecture one Social Entrepreneurship from a great man. His name is P.N.Deverajan. Here is his background : Chemical Engineer from IIT Kharagpur, with experience as Group President (Corporate Planning & Development), Reliance Industries Ltd., as Director in RBI & Bank of Baroda, Member of Planning board, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Chairman & Managing Director of IDPL & Hindustan Organic Chemicals Ltd. He is one of the Board of Directors of Dr. Reddys Laboratories

After spending much of his life time in earning and corporate life he decided to give something to society. So he took a path of social entrepreneurship. But instead of starting of his own brain child to serve the society he had a different thought. He thought of creating a social entrepreneur from each of the Indian citizen. Indirectly it will create a whole lot of employment opportunities. So in this way he is contributing as a social entrepreneur.

Hence it started Center for Initiative and Management, a Learning Center for potential social entrepreneurs. It is nothing but a institute that will teach people on Social Entrepreneurship. It was first started in Chennai in 2000, then in Hyderabad in 2002 . Fortunately as a part of establishing it in Mumbai it approached SIES college in Nerul. And there he started a Post Graduate course on Social Entrepreneurship [PGSEM]. It is basically a 1 year course.

This is the background information. Now what i learned from the lecture is as follows. Actually i will be giving the understanding of what Mr. Deverajan has conceived. The FIRST step is the whole Idea and the Intention. The SECOND Part is how to make a model out of it. THIRD is how to manage the FINANCE.

FIRST :

So he started of with defining what is Entrepreneur and Social Entrepreneur. He stated the basic qualities of Entrepreneurship are as follows A person who is a VISIONARY, who has some domain specific SKILL, has a good IDENTIFICATION OF AN AREA or a GAP, and the most important IMPLEMENT that idea in an INNOVATIVE way with future SUSTAINABILITY.

Now what differentiates a SOCIAL entrepreneur. All the things above mentioned are same only the GAP here has a SOCIAL NON PROFIT aspect. His/Her entire intention is to solve that problem occurred from the gap, and see to it that it REPLICATES as fast as possible. So the basic difference between a Business Entrepreneur and a Social Entrepreneur is that the later wants his idea to be copied and replicated and he/she do not copyright or patent it. Hence in term of Deverajan he is a Manager of the DIVIDE. Hence SE is slight different from Social Worker, Social Worker do not make the use of professional management skills and qualities.

The most quality that he focused is Leadership. He termed it Servant Leadership. He explained us that normal leadership is Power Leadership, it means it comes out of power and designation. A social entrepreneur should be a servant leader, he/she should serve people and make leaders out of themselves.

So summing it up following are the qualities

1 – INNOVATIVE

2 – SHARING abilities/ NETWORKING capabilities

3 – BEST PRACTICES [documentation]

4 – CHANGE MANAGER

5 – RISK TAKER

6 – A LEADER, A EXCELLENT COMMUNICATOR.

Then suddenly one of our students gave an excellent definition of entrepreneur, He/She is the person who converts threat in an opportunity.

SECOND:

Second step he focused how to manage the institute that one creates in this process. He was very clear about it. He had an idea of a MICRO FIRM. It meant that the firm should not have the size of more than 10 people. Everywhere you go you should be able to create a Micro-Firm for that area, which should run independently.

THIRD:

Finally comes the most important part FINANCE. How to manage finance.

He stated that funds can be raised from DONATIONS, FEES, GRANTS and VENTURE PHILANTHROPISTS. We should treat them as our customers or SHARE holders. We should get funds from them regularly and also get some new clients. Following is how the Balance Sheet can be maintained.

TopLine : INCOME : donations, fees, grants, Vps.

Income Generating Activity

TOTAL INCOME.

Expenditure: service provided, teachers, etc..

Bottom Line – 1 : NET SAVINGS/ SURPLUS

Bottom Line – 2: MEASUREMENT OF WORK IN Percent of Achievement of GOALS

IT industry part -03

Welcome back.

Still wondering what is the worst part? Well it isn't that worst actually. But it appears more to a fresher.

Let me explain. Now that most of us have spend time in the industry we understand that programming is not the only challenge. In fact there are many more problems which is at times crucial. But, the worst part I am talking is, nobody specifies it clearly. So the end result is people get frustrated and demotivated to work.

This whole article is from my point of view, nothing personal. The industry never try to be in sync with the education system neither do the education system. Now people have realized it. Still we are in a better place and chances are there to be the best. The problem is students are not aware of the exact industry scenario and the various kind of job profile. Its like our five fingers, no single finger is that important, but together they do miracle. So in the same way not development is important it is a part of the whole Software Development Lifecycle and Software Services.

Software, Applications or Services are just a product. But end of the day we have to generate revenues out of that product. Hence the various other processes that make this product profitable, for a company, is also that important. At times it is even more valuable then the product itself. Nobody come and tell these things to us. See every body on this earth is suitable for some kind of job. It is the duty of the industry to make aware of all this job profiles, so that students themselves can at least categorize themselves. The result, at least 50% will enjoy their job.

Ending this brief point of view, I am still thankful to this wonderful industry which created a gamut of employment opportunities for each and every kind of person on this green planet.

IT Industry part 02

Here I am once again, continuing the post.

So I was telling what was the scenario then and now. During our diploma days we used feel that at least we will lend up with some job.

But as and when we got exposure to the industry and the curriculum we understood that everything is not that easy. We were fascinated with the challenge IT creates in any core industry. Also at the technical level everyone wants programming as their job profile. Everyone is excited about the different technologies coming up in the industry. Very often we here new versions coming out. And then we have this dream company or profile to work with. So in that motivation we clear our bachelor course.

During the final year we have our campus recruitment. Always the recruitment goes in top to bottom order. As in the pattern is the top10 guys gets recruited fast and then the rest follows. So we here big names of IT industry coming and placing them. Hnce all of us are excited that at least some of us have made it to the biggie wiggies. And then comes the worst part

Indian IT industry part - 01.

First of all I should thank the IT industry and its allies which helped many graduates like me to get a job without much hustle.
Actually i have done my engineering after Diploma in Computer Science. So the day I entered the college I started hearing these news, that IT industry has started to pick up. Hence we were a bit relaxed, as in we will lend up with at least some kind of job.

Once during our lectures, the professor seemed to be in a good mood. Suddenly he started discussing about this IT bubble. He was just telling how difficult it was to get job for a fresh graduate. Though it was not that competitive as today, but the openings were not that much. This was the case for computer science graduates as well.

So whom should we thank, the IT industry as a whole or the globalistion it brought? To be precise its the globalisation to which half the credit goes, as far as India is concern. India being a slight conservative country keeping in mind the age old politics would not have faced the current glory. But then what exactly is IT industry.

If we categorize briefly it boils down to IT and IT enabled Services [ITES]. So if we consider all the engineers (since i am an computer science engineer) IT industry is preferred more. This is because every engineer loves a basic challenging atmosphere which during his/her curriculum only finds in programming. Hence its obvious we always look for companies that provide us with this challenge.

So here comes the whole issue as to why I am writing this post. Will continue in the next post, as this will become to lengthy.
